GAJA

The estate was founded in 1859 by Giovanni Gaja.  Five generations later, it has established itself as being one of Italy’s most famous and dynamic wineries in Piemonte, northwestern Italy where its red wines are world class.   The winery is unique thanks to the groundbreaking work In the 1970s by Angelo Gaja who challenged traditional Italian winemaking practices by creating exceptional Barbaresco and Barolo wines using a single varietal showcase the potential of the Nebbiolo grape. Gaja has always been a pioneer and guardian of legacy and tradition and Angelo Gaja introduced Bordeaux varietals and the use of small oak barrels to age wine. His philosophy is based on the advice of his father who always told him to think differently, do something different, and to have passion. The winery is now run by Angelo’s children but Angelo keeps a watchful eye over them.  They use a sustainable approach and carefully preserve the terroir. Over the years, the Gaja family have played an important role in revolutionising and improving the reputation and quality of Italian wine, which helped it to gain respect and recognition not only in Italy but around the world. Angelo’s description of wine as a person “If the Barbaresco were like my father, it would be fantastic”.
